Editorial By Marcie Cook
When I, Marcie Cook, went to the FAA office at 10100 Reunion Place, San Antonio, Texas, and questioned them as to how and why my injuries from the hot air balloon crash were viewed as "minor" I was told the following:
They said "the pilot, Steve Sprague, told us you were barely hurt". Now mind you, would a "barely hurt" individual be airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center Burn Unit? Why would the FAA take the word of the responsible party of this accident vs. calling the hospital or the victim's family?
The FAA never came to the crash site. Why not? Do they not care about those injured in these type of accidents?
Am I alone in thinking they should be more than a "little" concerned that one of their FAA approved pilots flew into power lines of 7960 volts (verified and reported to me by Karen Gonzales from Floresville Power Plant)?
Truth be told, they knew Steve on a first name basis when I approached them, and I'm wondering if this could be shades of the "good ole boy" syndrome? If I were with the FAA, I certainly would have come to the conclusion that it's conceivable that Steve Sprague was not doing his job keeping his passengers safe and would want to do a personal investigation into the matter. Their "apathehic" attitude in regards to hot air balloon accidents certainly indicates to me a total lack of concern on their part.
I was also told by the great FAA men that for an injury to be listed as "major", (See: FAA Documented Accident Report) there must be loss of limb or life. I have in fact, lost a major portion of my vision in my right eye and as you can see from the pictures (See: Photos) I went through quite a traumatic experience. Apparently, I just didn't fit the FAA appropriate verbiage so I could not get my report changed from "minor injury" to "major injury" as a result.
Even more astonishing, is the fact that the pilot, Steve Sprague, got off without so much as a citation!! He was off flying innocent, unknowing, people the very next morning while I laid in ICU.
Personally, and I'm sure others would agree, I think the FAA should be brought to task for such negligence.
IF YOUR STOMACH CAN TAKE IT!
